Valerie Falcioni- Wood and Glass Artist
I was born in Sudbury Ontario, a teacup shaped basin of rock, water and trees. It is home to the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek people and has sheltered and challenged generations of immigrants of diverse cultures who have embraced it as their home. The resilience and love of these people has nurtured a community that celebrates many histories and life stories.
My art is a reflection of this place and the person it has shaped.
I have a real need to spend time in the company of trees, clambering on rock and floating in or on water. These connections feed my old soul and invite me to be playful in celebrating the joy of being a part of this land.
I laugh that wood and glass are the perfect materials for my art- warm, organic wood and cold rigid glass. Crafting with wood is messy and loud in its first stages-soothing and contemplative in its completion. Glass work is quiet and clean-painfully anticipatory as I entrust the final shaping of my art to the kiln.
Ultimately it is the wood itself and the heat of the kiln that determines the creative expression. Sometimes it reflects my intent and sometimes it does not. I trust that the material knows best and that my manipulation of it was welcome and well executed. And this is where I return to the lessons of that place that I love and patiently try to grow my art to reflect its warmth, courage and joy.
